GUIDE TO SETTING UP SILENCER
As of Sunday, August 22nd, 2010
The recommended and easiest way is simply by downloading this installer: http://rgb9000.net/silencer An Alternate Installation File is: http://downloads.arsia-mons.com/sil0110.1.exe (Please see the FAQ for errors with this .exe) and install. When you connect, when you enter your username and password, if the username does not already exist it will create an account automatically. Please remember your password that you connect with, because it will automatically set that as your password. The other way:

Oh man that is terrible! I played silencer years ago and I got so excited when I read it was back. Any idea when it should be up again? Or is there anything people are doing now? It's not necessarily a permanent thing... it just went down not too long ago today, apparently Rick has been looking into it... I wouldn't worry too much yet -------------------- ![]() Proud Turk since 1999 ;P |

If you are unable to connect using the above steps, please also check that a firewall is not interfering. While a router should let you play OK, if you have a hardware firewall or a software firewall running (Like XPSP2, Norton, Mcafee, zonealarm etc) then it may block the traffic. Add a rule to let the packets through or disable the firewall as you play.

Silencer connects to both TCP and UDP ports. Lots of 'em. Just because you can get to the lobby doesn't mean you can play a game if your router's messed up.

Aady, do you know which ports? I can add em to the silencer faq.

TCP:
15101 (hardcoded i think) 15100 (I picked that arbitrarily; I don't know if Rick kept it) UDP: 6001 (default, can be changed) Those are all I know of for certain, but I've never sniffed traffic from a complete game session before... |

NAT routers should require no further configuration since silencer doesnt require you to open any ports. If your router is doubling as a firewall, it could interfere depending on settings. But if it works then it shouldnt need any more attention. Let the server ops worry about the rest...

In my experience many routers do not do NAT very well and cannot be relied upon to properly (or timely) send such packets. UDP seems to suffer the most, and cheap routers (the kind you'd use at home instead of at the office, which link four instead of forty) are often the most problematic. I'd always recommend explicitly forwarding game ports if you know how.

Thanks. |

I've noticed some errors with starting Silencer after using the new installation.
If you're using that one... Try navigating to your Silencer game folder and launching the silencer.exe from there -------------------- ![]() Proud Turk since 1999 ;P |

I got this error Can't open file 'globals.i' for r: The system cannot find the file specified. I have seen this error before. It is a simple fix, just change the shortcut that was generated for silencer. The working directory is set to one of the sub-directories, change it to the location of your silencer.exe and you're all set. -------------------- --R

Hey guys, Silencer was working a few days ago for me but now it is saying cannot connect to won server, or something similar to that. I have a few guys and we use to play ALL the time and they want to download it too. Could you tell me if this is a server issue or just my computer. Thank you! |
