GUIDE TO SETTING UP SILENCER
As of Sunday, August 22nd, 2010
    - There are multiple ways of installing Silencer at the moment.

The recommended and easiest way is simply by downloading this installer:
    http://rgb9000.net/silencer

    An Alternate Installation File is:
    http://downloads.arsia-mons.com/sil0110.1.exe
(Please see the FAQ for errors with this .exe)

    and install.

When you connect, when you enter your username and password, if the username does not already exist it will create an account automatically. Please remember your password that you connect with, because it will automatically set that as your password.

    The other way:
  1. Download and install this Silencer version 1.10:
    http://downloads.arsia-mons.com/sil0110.exe
  2. Download the latest version of the silencer patch.

    Latest Silencer Patch: http://team.steamlessproject.org/rguest/Si...tanServer06.zip

    - This is a zipped file. Zipped means it contains multiple files, and needs to be extracted from there.
    - A good program that can be used to extract the files is: http://7-zip.org/
    - Install this only if you do not have a zip program.
  3. Open up the .zip file you just downloaded. Open it up in a zip program. (7-Zip if you installed that) Extract the file contents of the .zip file into your silencer directory.
    - You will only need Silencer.exe and WONDLL.dll from this ZIP archive, but it won't hurt to extract it all.
    - You probably installed version 1.10 of Silencer in: C:\Program Files\Mind Control Software\Silencer\. Extract all of the files in that directory. The zip program will ask you if you wish to overwrite the current files. Select YES.
  4. Once you have copied the files from the .zip file into your silencer directory, you should be ready to play!
  5. When you connect, when you enter your username and password, if the username does not already exist it will create an account automatically. Please remember your password that you connect with, because it will automatically set that as your password.
FAQ
  • I get "Connecting to won.net" but it never connects, saying "Connecting to Won.net Failed"
    - There may be a few things that are wrong.
    1. The server is down.
    2. Your computer is not letting information get to where it needs to be. (Due to a Firewall, or a router)
Check your Port Forwarding of your router, and port forward these ports:

    TCP: 15100, 15101, 15102
    UDP: 6001

    For additional help: http://portforward.com/
  • "What is the current update for Open Source, Silencer Clones, and other Silencer related news?"
    - There are multiple efforts for cloning going on. Open Source doesn't seem to be a option currently. We'll see what comes up. The best bet is to keep a look out at the general Arsia-Mons forum. The O2 Project is currently the latest and most accurate silencer clone attempt.
  • "I went away from the computer for a couple of hours with silencer on, and there were lots of games to join, however I couldn't join any of them"
    - Those were games that were made previously, it stopped refreshing after a while. Exit the lobby, and rejoin the server. All should be well. (Those games will be gone)
  • What is ladder "jumping" and how do you do it?
    - It is quite simple, and a recommended play style for the more intermediate and advanced players since it gets you up ladders quite fast if you are efficient and quite slow if you aren't. With the default controls; while climbing up a ladder, hold 4 and 6 at the same time, push space bar, then push up to catch yourself while you are falling. Repeat. It takes practice!
    - It is now believed that Mind Control had initially came across it as a bug. They noticed it had dramatically increased the pace of the game, and was a key and vital part ever since.
  • What is "hack running" and how do you do it?
    - This is also quite simple, however the knowledge of actually performing this is not well spread. Push spacebar to start hacking a terminal. Then push tab once, and move in the direction you want. Caution, you can only move in one direction if you push tab once. You must push tab again if you want to move a different direction.
    - This obviuosly is a bug, and will be fixed once a open source arrives.
    - It is not recommended to use because of others not knowing how to do it, you will be considered "cheating".
  • Do I need to create an account to play Silencer?
    - At the moment, No. You simply need to log in with any account name (see below) and choose any password. Remember this password, as you will need it in the future to log in.
  • I get this error when trying to log in: "Could not process login."
    - This happens when you did not copy over the new WONDLL.dll to the Silencer directory.
  • I get this error when trying to connect to a game: "ERR-Wrong-Session".
    - This simply means the game has already started. Join another, or start your own.
    - Or that your computer did not successfully sync with the server.
    - Too many of the client's/server's packets were dropped due to TTL, or non-delivery.
Possible Fixes include reinstalling, opening ports, having another person host the game, or choosing a different server.
  • I get this error when trying to log in: "Account Already Connected"
    - Your username must start with a letter, after the first letter, it can be numbers, letters, _, -, or a .
    - It can mean that username is already logged in, as normal.
    - Or it can mean wrong password, if the account has been created and you entered the wrong password.
    - It has also been reported that some users have not been able to log into an account they logged into last session. The cause has not yet been determined.
  • My zip program cannot open the .zip file.
    - Download the .exe/.msi from the recommended installation targets above.
    - Try downloading a different zip program. Certain extensions can not be opened by certain programs.
(Although it should if it is indeed a zip extractor program)
    - Try 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)
  • What is IRC, and how do I join it?
    - First download this useful IRC chat client:
    http://mirc.com/
Install it, choose a nickname, etc. For server, add a new server: irc.gamesurge.net
Once you have joined the server, type the following in any window: /join #silencer
That will bring you to a chat screen where you can chat.
  • I get this error when trying to start the game: "Can't Open Globals.i [...]"
    - The shortcut is incorrect once you install if you use http://downloads.arsia-mons.com/sil0110.1.exe. The shortcut must be changed. There are two ways to fix this error.

    The recommended Fix:
    1. Uninstall Silencer (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs)
    2. Install this exe from here: http://rgb9000.net/silencer

    The Alternate Fix:
    1. Right click on the Silencer shortcut, click properties. You should see "Start In".
    2. Take off the "\bin_til" so it should read "[...] \program files\Mind Control Software\Silencer" for a Start in target.
  • I want to turn off the sound of silencer. Is there anyway to do this?
    - Yes. All you have to do is delete or move the file CLOSER.MP3 in your Silencer directory under the folder "SOUND".
I'll keep updating this as I encounter questions smile.gif

Oh man that is terrible! I played silencer years ago and I got so excited when I read it was back. Any idea when it should be up again? Or is there anything people are doing now?

It's not necessarily a permanent thing... it just went down not too long ago today, apparently Rick has been looking into it...
I wouldn't worry too much yet

If you are unable to connect using the above steps, please also check that a firewall is not interfering. While a router should let you play OK, if you have a hardware firewall or a software firewall running (Like XPSP2, Norton, Mcafee, zonealarm etc) then it may block the traffic. Add a rule to let the packets through or disable the firewall as you play.

Silencer connects to both TCP and UDP ports. Lots of 'em. Just because you can get to the lobby doesn't mean you can play a game if your router's messed up.

Aady, do you know which ports? I can add em to the silencer faq.

TCP:
15101 (hardcoded i think)
15100 (I picked that arbitrarily; I don't know if Rick kept it)

UDP:
6001 (default, can be changed)

Those are all I know of for certain, but I've never sniffed traffic from a complete game session before...

I use 15101 and 15102.

NAT routers should require no further configuration since silencer doesnt require you to open any ports. If your router is doubling as a firewall, it could interfere depending on settings. But if it works then it shouldnt need any more attention. Let the server ops worry about the rest...

In my experience many routers do not do NAT very well and cannot be relied upon to properly (or timely) send such packets. UDP seems to suffer the most, and cheap routers (the kind you'd use at home instead of at the office, which link four instead of forty) are often the most problematic. I'd always recommend explicitly forwarding game ports if you know how.

I've noticed some errors with starting Silencer after using the new installation.
If you're using that one...
Try navigating to your Silencer game folder and launching the silencer.exe from there

I have seen this error before. It is a simple fix, just change the shortcut that was generated for silencer. The working directory is set to one of the sub-directories, change it to the location of your silencer.exe and you're all set.

Hey guys, Silencer was working a few days ago for me but now it is saying cannot connect to won server, or something similar to that. I have a few guys and we use to play ALL the time and they want to download it too. Could you tell me if this is a server issue or just my computer. Thank you!
